Skip the Slush Pile and Sell Your Next Novel
You’ve probably heard that a good book will sell itself. Yet many talented novelists never make it out of agents’ slush piles. There are just two reasons why:
• Because their query didn’t make agents say, “Please send me your novel” …
• And they didn’t position themselves as a storyteller publishing pros would love to work with. (Hint: This isn’t about posting on social media all day. In fact, that often backfires.)
To sell your novel, you must effectively pitch your story … and yourself.
I learned this when my query letter for my debut novel netted two offers of agent representation in less than 10 days. My agent used that same query to pitch and sell my debut at auction for six figures to a major publisher, and to sell foreign rights to more than half a dozen countries. (It also became the basis for the book’s jacket copy.)
And you want to know a secret? My novel wasn’t amazing.
But knowing how to package it helped editors and publishers see that it was marketable—and spot my potential as an author. That led to a publishing deal that changed my life. Today, I have a seven-figure fiction brand and recently sold my eleventh novel at auction in a multi-six-figure, two-book deal.
Over the past five years, I’ve also helped hundreds of novelists write queries, secure literary agents, and sell their novels. During that time, I’ve discovered what I’ve come to think of as the paradox of publishing: To convince publishers to take a chance on you, your novel needs to sound like it stands out and fits into the literary marketplace.
That’s true regardless of your genre, and whether you’re unpublished or a mid-career author with a backlist and established brand.
This is where your pitch and positioning come in. Fortunately, these are skills any novelist can learn. And once you do, you’ll use them throughout the rest of your fiction career. I still write queries the same way I did when I sold my debut (and those queries have become the book blurbs for all of my novels).
Ready to stop having your hard work overlooked and get a publishing deal you’re proud of?
I created Pitch Pro just for you.
In this interactive, six-week course, you’ll learn proven strategies for pitching and selling your novel. I’ll teach you how to:
• Craft a compelling logline (aka elevator pitch)—so that when someone says, “Tell me about your story,” you’ll know exactly how to hook them.
• Write an irresistible query. Whether you write commercial, genre, literary, or upmarket (bookclub) fiction, my proven process will make your story sound unputdownable.
• Choose comps that strengthen your pitch and tell agents, editors, and publishers that your novel will appeal to loads of readers.
• Devise a simple but highly effective strategy for querying, evaluating feedback, and planning your next move.
• Build an authentic online presence that attracts publishing pros and your future readers. (This is key even if you’re not published yet.)
• Create a clear, multi-year plan for your fiction career that incorporates your current novel and taps into your long-term potential as an author.
BONUS: Because this is the first time I’m offering Pitch Pro, I’m offering an exclusive, one-time bonus: You will receive two rounds of personalized query feedback from me. I’ll email edits directly to you (your query will not be used in the course unless you decide to share it). You’ll receive instructions for submitting your query to me during the second week of the course. This alone is a $700 value, and more than 90% of writers who hire me to edit their query letters receive manuscript requests from agents.

HOW PITCH PRO WORKS
Pitch Pro is a six-week interactive course that teaches you to pitch your novel(s) while building a foundation for your fiction brand and publishing career.
We’ll meet every Friday via Zoom from 3-4 p.m. E.T. I’ll teach you one of the six lessons outlined below, then answer participants’ questions. Pitch Pro is a small group program designed to give you plenty of opportunities to ask me how to best apply this information to your novel and career.
Can’t attend live? All sessions will be recorded and uploaded to a course portal, which you’re guaranteed access to for at least one full year after the course ends. See below for the full schedule.
You’ll also have access to an optional private Facebook community, where you can connect with me and other participants.
The Curriculum
Each lesson is designed to deliver essential info with zero fluff or filler, so you don’t get overwhelmed (and have ample time to put what you’ve learned into practice).
You’ll also receive a worksheet with each lesson’s takeaways, as well as exercises to help you apply the concepts. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll learn:
WEEK 1: Your Quick Pitch: “Tell me about your novel”: The next time someone asks you that, you’ll know exactly what to say—because in this module, you’ll learn to create a magnetic logline (aka elevator pitch). In addition to helping you secure an agent and sell your novel, loglines can be used to garner media coverage, create social media content and ads, and secure additional money-making opportunities (such as speaking gigs and essays related to your book).
WEEK 2: Your Query: You’ll discover how to craft a concise, ultra-compelling query letter for agents and publishers. A good query is far more than a sales tool. Done well, it helps you spot and correct critical holes in your plot and character arc that you’re unlikely to uncover while outlining and writing. That can help you strengthen your story (which, yes, further ups the odds you sell it).
WEEK 3: Your Comps: Good comparable titles (aka comps) tell publishers it’s safe to take a chance on your novel. Unfortunately, the vast majority of novelists cite the wrong books during pitching. You’ll learn to sidestep common comp mistakes and select titles that demonstrate that your novel will sell. You’ll also learn what to do if you straddle genres or don’t like your competition (which is surprisingly common!).
WEEK 4: Your Querying Strategy: There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to pitching agents—but a few key strategies will minimize your anxiety while maximizing your momentum. In this lesson, you’ll devise a simple but highly effective process for submitting your novel. You’ll also find out best practices for evaluating and responding to feedback from agents (and later, editors)—as well as how to use that feedback to determine your next best moves.
WEEK 5: Your Online Presence: Being a good literary citizen isn’t about making fake or forced connections—or spending hours a day online. In this lesson, you’ll learn to foster authentic connections with readers, fellow novelists, and other industry professionals. You’ll also write a bio that makes you shine without sounding sales-y, and get tips for creating a professional and welcoming website.
WEEK SIX: Your Publishing Plan: Contrary to popular belief, you can plan for success—even if you still don’t know where your novel will land. In the final lesson of Pitch Pro, you’ll outline a clear, multi-year plan for your fiction career that incorporates your current manuscript and taps into your greater potential as an author.
Important: While my pitching process has helped hundreds of novelists get published and reach their writing goals, I cannot guarantee that taking this course leads to a publishing deal. (I actually recommend running the other direction if anyone promises you that.) Likewise, while I encourage you to consider my suggestions, everything I teach or recommend is 100% optional.

FAQs ABOUT PITCH PRO
-
No, it’s for any novelist looking to uplevel their pitch and better understand how to position themselves in the literary marketplace. While I will discuss how to find an agent and then editor, the content is also applicable to authors who have agents and/or publishers.
-
That’s completely okay. All sessions of Pitch Pro are recorded and the course is designed to be flexible—participation is encouraged but never required.
-
You will have access for a full year from the end of the course (through 9/12/26).
-
Yes—that’s more than okay! The Facebook group is completely optional. Facebook isn’t our favorite, either, but we’re using it because it’s more accessible than Slack or Discord.
-
Yes, it’s the only program designed to specifically help you get published. That said, the content has slight overlap with a few of the things I teach in the Career Novelist Mastermind, particularly planning for a successful fiction career and marketing your work in an authentic way.
Some of the content from Pitch Pro also overlaps with lessons in Bestseller Bootcamp. However, that course is self-paced, broader in scope, and doesn’t offer live coaching and teaching. Pitch Pro is designed to be more personalized and interactive so that you can apply every concept to your specific novel and career. If you’ve already taken Bestseller Bootcamp, please email team@evenbetter.co for more information.
-
in my opinion, yes. Pitching is a skill all novelists can and should learn—as no matter how successful your career is, you will still need to get your novel ideas approved by your publishing team.
-
It depends. If you hope to traditionally publish at some point, then this course will tell you how to navigate that process.
If you don’t intend to traditionally publish but just want to write a stellar book blurb (that’s the description that goes on your book jacket and your novel’s online product pages), then you’ll learn to do that during the second lesson. Moreover, many of the other lessons, like boosting your online presence and creating a publishing roadmap, are beneficial for all novelists.
